It’s time to write poems that rip people’s head off,

poems that plunge lives into disarray.

Write them. Write them now. Stanzas so powerful

that the timid finally stand up to their mothers

and say yes to their lovers, verses so tender

that the angry weep

and the grumpy pick lilies for their neighbours.

Get to it. The world needs your inky offerings.

Write poems, poems so bold

that wankers sell their flash houses

and bugger off to the coast,

poems that conjure up ovens,

not in the manner of Sylvia Plath

but in the manner of long slow afternoons

baking pizzas for friends,

oily with herbs and love.

Do it now. Shake the words out of their boxes:

typhoon, marmalade, hippopotamus,

radiant blue miracle, hydrangea, eclipse.

Let the words sing and dance and play
